“No loaf is better than half a loaf”

[1]

The Japanese are known to be hospitable people, so why is it that they seldom invite people to their homes?

loaf「パン1個」hospitable「もてなしのよい、客人を歓迎する」

[2]

The reason, according to a British friend of mine who has spent most of her long life in Japan, is because they think they have to entertain to perfection. "No loaf is better than half a loaf". Imagine the embarrassment of having guests arrive when the house is not clean and tidy and decorated appropriately for the season! Better not to invite people at all than risk offending them!

entertain「もてなす、歓待する」 to perfection「完全に」 tidy「きちんとした」 offend「~の感情を害する、不快にする」

[3]

The British, who believe that "Half a loaf is better than none", tend to have a more relaxed "take us as we are" attitude towards their surroundings. However, they do take trouble to welcome their guests with home cooking. They will apologize if a cake is bought rather than home made. Another British friend of mine told me of her first experience of being invited to lunch in a Japanese home. She was served sushi! How rude, she thought, to invite someone to lunch and serve something bought from a shop!

Half a loaf is better than none. 「(諺) 半分のパンでもないよりはまし」  take~as we are [they are]「~をありのままに受けとる」

[4]

When it comes to casual visitors, the two cultures share a typical welcome: "Do come in and have a cup of tea!".

concept「考え」 when it comes to~「~ということになれば」 casual visitor「思いがけない訪問客」
