Let's cooking!

[4]

Even more jarring to a native speaker than the usages above, however, is the "Let's + V-ing" pattern, as in "Let's cooking!" or "Let's talking!" This always reminds me of a student I had many years ago. I was teaching short intensive courses for adults during summer vacation. Mr. Koyama was a single office worker in his forties, very short and round. Throughout his entire week of English conversation classes, his mouth would open and his lips would move, but he never actually spoke. Like the parents of a baby, his teachers and classmates anxiously awaited his first words, but they never came. He looked terrified all day, every day.

jarring「耳障りな、不快な」 intensive「集中的な」 entire「全部の」 terrified「おびえた」

Let's cooking!" や"Let's talking!"

[5]

But at the drinking party on the last night, English words started to flow out of him, beginning, of course, with "Let's."

[6]

"Let's dancing!" he said to one classmate after another. (He had a sharp, high voice like a small dog's.) One hour and several drinks later, he moved on to "Let's kissing!" For better or worse, he did not address the women present, but rather the men?particularly a large, muscular member of the Maritime Self-Defense Forces. "Let's kissing!" Mr. Koyama kept demanding. "Mr. Koyama," I said, "what happened to you? You've become a monster!" "Yes," he said cheerfully. "I am Drunkenstein!" Well, I thought, if a man can invent a name like "Drunkenstein," then let's let him say whatever he wants.

"Let's dancing!"
