[3]

Snow can reflect 90% of sunlight. It has a high "albedo" (0.9). Water and ground have a low albedo. They soak up more heat. As snow and ice melt, water and ground soak up more heat causing more melting and even more rapid warming. Beyond an average rise of 2 degrees centigrade, it might be impossible to halt the warming and rising sea levels even if we cut our emissions to zero. The circulation currents of the north Atlantic and Pacific might change and alter global weather patterns.

◎albedo「反射係数」 soak up「吸収する」 halt「~を停止させる」 emission「排出」 circulation「循環」 current「流れ、海流」

Mariko:

It is good to know that the world leaders who met recently in Copenhagen have agreed to try to keep the average global warming within 2 degrees centigrade. I love seeing the snow on Mount Fuji in the winter!

Michael:

Yes, but it is a pity that they were not able to achieve a legally binding agreement on CO2 emissions. I grew up with a view of Snowdonia, and it would never be the same without the snow in the winter.

◎legally binding「法的拘束力のある」 Snowdonia「スノードーニア(ウェールズ北西部、最高峰Snowdon山を囲む山地で国立公園)」
