“Do come in and have a cup of tea”

[1]

Before people had telephones, and especially before they had mobile phones, it was quite common to drop by unexpectedly to visit friends, just because you happened to be in the neighbourhood.

[2]

In Japan, unexpected visitors usually hesitate to go in beyond the genkan unless they are invited in a second or a third time, and then finally they will accept a cup of tea.

[3]

In Britain it can be similar. Suppose you are driving in the Cotswolds and you see the name of the village of an old friend. You find her house and knock on her door. She opens it and says, "Good afternoon! What a pleasant surprise to see you! Won't you come in?" You say, "Thank you, but there are so many of us, we just wanted to say hello because we were passing nearby." Your friend insists, "Do come in and have a cup of tea." If it is a warm dry afternoon, she might say "You must join us for tea in the garden". You would then admire her flowers.

[4]

In Britain there is a whole etiquette to serving tea, some putting milk in first, others afterwards. Japanese tea does not need milk or sugar or spoons, so it is easier. If you empty your cup, the hostess will usually refill it without asking, and it is not rude if you do not finish it.

Mrs. Williams: "Would you like another cup of tea?"

Keiko (trying to be polite) "No thank you".

Keiko:             "Thank you very much, just a little bit".
